You may have driven by a “Funeral Store” or you have seen a “casket store” online. What the unsuspecting funeral consumer doesn’t know is that these so called stores are way for funeral homes to get you to use their funeral home for a service. But it's worse that that! The funeral consumer is taken to the wood shed with high pressure sales tactics and trickery.
About the Funeral consumers Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, we are a nonprofit funeral educational resource dedicated to helping the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky consumer.
If you look closely you will learn that several funeral homes are using “stores” to advertise their funeral business. Why would they do this? Well, some of it has to do with state funeral laws. Under Ohio funeral laws, each licensed funeral home must have a licensed funeral director acting as a manager, and is ultimately in charge. Whereas, a funeral store does not fall under the same rules as a funeral home, there is not law requiring a funeral director as a manager.
How should you buy a casket? Always remember if you are going to be cremated or buried in a green manner you may not need a casket. But if you choose to be buried or entombed you most likely will need to purchase a casket.
First decide what kind you want. Examples would be color, metal or wooden, interior material, handles and accessories.
You do not have to buy a casket from a funeral home. You have the right to shop and purchase anywhere. The funeral home cannot charge a handling fee or not handle the service because you purchased from somewhere else.
